What is polymer clay? Here are some basics

Polymer clay was invented in the 1930’s. Many will remember it from our childhood, a fun and easy to use product great for keeping little hands busy. Today it is made by several different brands including
Du-kit, Fimo, Premo, Kato and Sculpey. Polymer clay is a synthetic modelling material that is made up of PVC, pigments and a plasticizer. It is sold in a pliable form in a great range of colors, once baked in a standard oven  it becomes hard. These days you will find it being used by jewelry designers, doll artists, sculptors, hobbyists,
illustrators, animators and miniaturists.
The possibilities with polymer clay are endless. Polymer clay can be mixed with a wide range of materials to achieve many different effects. These materials include metallic powders and foils, paint, inks, glitter, embossing powders, sand, fibres and threads, and even dried herbs and spices.
Polymer clay can be stamped, carved, extruded, painted, textured, grated, sanded and varnished to name a
few. It is very light and durable and perfect for making all kinds of things especially faux beads of all kinds. Some of these are:
Paua   Wood   Bone   Amber   Coral   Jade   Marble   Bronze   Mother of Pearl
Silver   Turquoise  Lapis Lazuli   Agate   Onyx   Ivory   Quartz   Pebbles   Jade

Whether you are a jewelry designer, sculptor or crafter polymer clay is a wonderful and exciting medium to use. I have only scratched the surface on what there is to know about this wonderful product. I hope this gives you a little insight in to the world of polymer clay.
